Phoebe instantly wanted to ask if she was okay, but kept that impulse in check. She knew what the answer would be and the step forward might become a leap back so she bit down on it. It obviously wasn't okay because if her mind had been focused, Kate wouldn't have got hit. Her hands went up waiting for a retaliatory attack just in case, "maybe but sometimes it's easier talking to someone not invested than someone that is."
