Day Six, the game is still a part of her, but it’s a part of her she’s ready to put down. She won’t say it’s because of Auggie. It’s not. Not really. He didn’t hurt anything with his Zen-hot. He’s kind of like Magnus, Will and Declan. Makes her want to be better than she is. But since he doesn’t know her from before, it’s different. There’s no expectation she’s going to go bad or suspicion of it. It’s kind of... a taste of who she could be here.
She’s got a long way to go to be that person and better reasons to do it than a cute blind guy with great game. Like a British ex-immortal boss she’d do anything for, a gorgeous British ex-Special Forces who the hell knows what she’ll do anything with, and a shrink BFF who doesn’t know her as well as she needs him to.
So today when she finishes her coffee, she’s going to drop the last pieces back in the first places and sign off, by coming full circle back to Will. It’s a little switch, since it’s been first to first every day. But this is still first to first, just a little bit of a change-up. A curve ball. A split-fingered fastball or a deliberate walk to load the bases. Yeah, like that.
She has to wait awhile for Trixa to split, but when she does, Kate’s in and out like a middle reliever. There’s one job to do, and one only. Putting the little bamboo bird under Trixa’s pillow and putting a note on top of it. A bird for a feather. Brown for black. This one meant something to a carver near the beach. Drinks on me if you give it back.
It’s a little sloppy. An invitation to figure her out, if Will doesn’t. But he will. He’s Will, even if he’s not her Will. Not yet. Maybe... maybe when she leaves the toolbox lid she’s packing up on the bookshelf where she got the baseball, he will be.
She’s a little sloppy in other ways too. Like carrying the toolbox lid in a bag in plain sight while she heads from Trixa’s place to Will and Magnus’s. She’s not sure whether she wants to get caught or she’s just playing with fire. One thing’s sure. She wants Will and Magnus to know.
Because she could have hurt these people. She could have stolen from them, really. Could have kept things and destroyed things and lined her pockets. But she didn’t.
In the end, Kate decides, that’s the point of all of this. It’s not what she did, but what she didn’t.
[[OOC: Billy will have told Beckett about the pince-nez that belonged to Francis that he'd been given, and that there were instructions on how to return them. He had his Bag End bookend (just the one, the Bilbo side) stolen two days prior. They might've tracked through Francis to Ishiah to Trixa. None of the people in the other chain of break-ins would've come forward yet. Will tipped them off earlier today that he's about 98% sure that Kate's responsible and would've answered any questions they had about her pretty honestly.
Catch her anywhere on the path between Trixa's hut and Magnus & Will's.]]
