[For Savannah] It messed me up, need a second to breathe

Kate's tired of kissing strangers to get them free of mistletoe. She's especially tired of snooty Victorian Brits (even if they turn out fine). And she's even more tired, raw, from the shades of little Victorian children, none of them acting like kids at all if she tries to talk to them.

She spends the afternoon shopping, in and out of little curio shops. She "buys" a small book of maps, a tiny globe on a brass stand, a small one for Declan, an ivory elephant, two scrimshaw carved scene on matched walrus tusks (it reminds her of the steno tusks she didn't end up stealing) and a tea set. Kids like tea sets, right?

It's sunset by the time she crosses the bridges to what used to be the Compound. She's planning to slip in and leave some of the things for the kids at the Children's Office and get out before anyone catches her. Just like she's been doing. Tonight when she gets in, there's a light in the office. Savannah's there still.

Kate's about to leave, but the swell of Savannah's belly in silhouette when she turns toward the light and the smile in her eyes arrests Kate. She tucks her gloves into her pockets, pushes her hair back and straight, then knocks.

Savannah looked up and smiled just as wide as she could manage.

"Well hello there," she said. It took some doing but she worked her way up out of her seat. She wore a lovely outfit suitable of the time but it was without corset or bustle. It was merely a skirt and a bodice, both of them simultaneously fitted for the proper lines and loose enough for her belly.

"Come in, come in. You're a little late for me to put you to work, Kate," she laughed. "What brings you in?"

She noticed the goods but thought better of mentioning them. She wasn't so naive to think all the new things in the children's office magicked themselves there- she just didn't know who had been bringing them. Now she had her suspicions.

Smiling, because Savannah's smile is contagious, Kate pushes the bag back behind her, even though it's clearly there from the strap on her shoulder. She gives a quiet, almost sheepish shrug that's most of her answer. There are words but not enough and way too many.

"It's not really important," Kate tells her and lies to them both. "Just thought I'd see how you're doing." That part's true, even if it's not the whole truth.

"How're you and the baby?" It's a nice normal question for a nice normal girl and if it feels like mud in her mouth it just proves Kate's not. Nice or normal. Savannah is and Kate likes her for that.

"We're gettin' real sick of each other," Savannah laughed, her hand smoothing over the roundness of her belly. "My due date is right after Christmas and the baby is gettin' cramped. I'll be glad when it's born and I can be finished."

She gestured for Kate to come in to where there were adult sized chairs to sit down on.

"So, really, what're you doing, honey? What'cha got in the bag?"

[identity profile] girlsolo.livejournal.com 2011-12-18 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
"A Christmas baby." Kate finds she's sort of, well, delighted with the idea. She's not a Christian, obviously. Doesn't care about Christmas one way or another. But it makes other people happy (like Declan), or sad (also like Declan), and she thinks a baby born around Christmas might be loved and cherished, thought of as a miracle instead of a burden.

Oh gods. She rolls her eyes at herself as she sets the bag by her side when she sits. Hopefully Savannah won't catch it.

"Did some shopping out in London, that's all. Nothing special. Some stuff for Declan--" She smiles, voice softening when she says his name. It's stupid, but she can't really help it.

"Saw a few things I thought you might like to have for the kids and since nothing costs anything..." Kate shrugs, the less of an issue she makes out of it, the less Savannah will think of it, the less likely she is to connect it to the other stuff she's brought for the kids. And even if she does, maybe she won't ask why. "I just picked them up for you."

"Oh! The kids will just love new things," she beamed, eager to look at what Kate had brought. There were so many wonderful things in the children's office right now- trains and dolls and houses and just everything. Even the blocks were seriously fancy-pants.

"Don't be shy, come show me what you've got. You can even help me put things away...if you don't mind. My ankles have just about had it, not that I'm complaining. I just have my limits these days."

[identity profile] girlsolo.livejournal.com 2011-12-20 08:56 am (UTC)(link)
"Sure, yeah. I can help tidy up. Shouldn't you have your feet up or something anyway?" Kate says and climbs back up to her feet. "Just tell me what you need me to do."

She reaches into her satchel for the stuff for the kids. "Anyway, it's not much really. Just a few things. I don't know what kids like." That's quiet, kind of an awkward admission as she gives Savannah the book of maps first. "I got this little book of maps of London. I know we all have them, but it was pretty, and has lots of smaller segments. I thought maybe they could find their houses this way."

"Oh this would be so good for a little field trip. Kate, this is so thoughtful," Savannah said brightly. It didn't strike her as odd at all, just as one person doing something sweet and kind for another. It wasn't any different from what she herself would do..

"Have you been around the city much? Maybe you could come on a little walk and help point out sights. The kids just love to look up at the tall buildings. It's sure not like the jungle here."

"Why on earth would anyone be concerned about that?" Savannah laughed lightly. "I just bet you'd take as good'a care of the kids as anybody, Kate. You protected people before, right? You'd be just the best at going for a walk with a few little ones."

Savannah had a good feeling about the woman and was just certain no harm would come to any of the children for Kate was an honorable woman. She just knew it.

"Do you need some sugar? The kids will be so much fun for you, I promise. Just you wait until you meet Abby and her brother Daniel. They're a kick."

"John says 'If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.' It doesn't matter what you've done, Kate. All that matters in the eyes of the Lord and the people who know you is that you have changed," Savannah replied gently.

She was never sure who here believed in God. Since Boyd had vanished she didn't have anyone she could speak to about her faith in that way. Usually she simply kept it to herself, conversing with the Lord as she'd always been taught.

"And besides...I'm the boss, I reckon. If I have faith in you that has to say a lot. I certainly can't hold your past against you...we've all done things we're not proud of."

"Oh, I know that. I can tell, Kate. You're going to be a wonderful addition," she said. Then Savannah looked at the things Kate had brought and she wondered if the little things, shells and such, had come from the woman. If they had then she knew in her heart she was right about the other woman. No one who was good to children could be bad.

"You know...I'm going to need you, too. Once this baby comes I'm sure I'm not going to be able to do much while I recover. All the books say you're pretty useless after giving birth. I hope you're up to the task."

"Me? Oh, I won't need much help. I'm sure I'll stay in the clinic for a bit and then things will go back to normal. Working and spending time in the kitchen and if things go back to normal I can join the building crew again." she said lightly. "Though I suppose I should ask the baby's parents if they'll need anything from me."

A look of sweetness and innocence came over her and Savannah looked off at the sky.

"I hope not. This is just so horrible but I'm ready to be done."

"It's all right, Kate," she said gently. "The baby's parents. I'm a surrogate for a couple really wonderful guys. They want a family and it's a gift I can give," she explained.

But something Kate said made her curious and she had no issue with it being her business or not. She had to ask.

"What do you mean must've been? Do you have a little one back home?"

"Do you want to tell me about it?" she replied, offering an ear or a shoulder or whatever it might be that Kate needed. Savannah was now and always had been a good listener. She was always more ready to shut up and hear people than she was to talk about herself.

Not much of a talker. Savannah thought of John, her dear beloved John, and how it was work to get him to talk. He was eloquent in his letters, saying things she was sure she could scarcely get him to utter aloud for he simply wasn't that sort of man. But he'd tell her with ink and paper.

And she thought of Mace. He was taciturn as well, his words carefully chosen and only given in small doses. And yet he could and did say the most profound things at times.

Savannah felt that some of the people who she was closest to were the ones who said the least.

"If and when you do feel like talking about it, I'm more than ready to hear it. I might even have a wise word or two. Maybe just. I feel so bad that whatever it is is messing with you. Some weights are almost too great to bear on your own."

Savannah was quiet, simply watching and listening. Really listening. She heard more than Kate's words, she heard her heart. It wasn't just what she said but the way in which she said it.

"That's quite a bit to take in. Did you only learn this since you've been here or did you know before you came?" she asked, gently sidestepping the issue of Kate's son. That one fact spoke volumes about the way Kate seemed to feel about the children in general. It spoke volumes about the kind of woman who sat before her.

"That's a real good question. I think that it's something you're going to have to puzzle out yourself. We all think about what ifs, don't we? What if one thing was different or something had or hadn't happened. To know something really did happen in another...another universe, like you said, that's really something."

Then she reached out and laid her hand lightly on Kate's shoulder for it was a simple gesture that cost her nothing and yet it was something that could connect and ground a troubled person. And Kate, for all her strength and attitude, seemed to Savannah like this troubled her a little more than she let on. Or maybe she just thought of how she would react to news of a child and her own death.

She'd read that book about her and that was bad enough. What ifs had almost eaten her alive.

"All you can do is live now. In the moment. That's all we have. You can't change the past and you can't predict the future...and you sure as heck don't have any say in what goes on with another version of your life, right?"

"I had an idea it might have been," Savannah said. Not at the time, of course, but now, with all this, the pieces fit. All it did was cement her opinion that Kate would be a perfect addition to the staff.

"You can always bring things in. The kids just love them. And now you'll have the chance to play with them and teach them. I think you're going to have so much fun with us, Kate. I really do."

"Deal," she agreed, though she had her doubts that her idea of adult fun would be what Kate had in mind. It didn't matter right now, though. Right now she simply smiled, happy to have a new helper and a new friend.
